The Grammy Museum recently announced an exhibition of Jim Marshall‘s Rolling Stones photography, which opened on Saturday.
“The Rolling Stones 1972: Photographs by Jim Marshall” is scheduled to run through June next year.
The exhibit will be a two-room display of Jim Marshall’s photos of backstage scenes and performance stills from the California leg of the Rolling Stones’ 1972 tour as well as the rock band’s visits to Sunset Sound recording studios in Los Angeles.
During The Stones’ trips to Los Angeles, photographer Jim Marshall photographed Keith Richards and Mick Jagger working at Sunset Sound, and later, on assignment for Life magazine, joined the California leg of the ’72 tour, where he shot intimate backstage scenes and dynamic performance stills. His masterful eye and unlimited access allowed Marshall to capture the Stones’ wild rock ‘n’ roll energy at their best.
The exhibit will include 14 framed photos and 18 additional photos on a slideshow projected in the gallery.
The Rolling Stones’ 1972 album, Exile on Main Street, will be playing in the gallery.
The Patron’s Lounge will feature five of Jim Marshall’s contact sheets and provide a bit more context/quotes from Marshall that will give visitors a better sense of his photography philosophy and process.
