Johnny Marr has criticized former President Donald Trump for using The Smiths‘ song “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” at rallies.

Marr’s criticism came after footage of the song, being played at a Trump rally in South Dakota, emerged on social media.

“Ahh.right.OK,” Marr wrote in reply to a video shared by a user on X. “I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this shit shut right down right now.”

“Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” is reportedly being played as warm-up music at many of Trump’s presidential election campaign rallies.

Artists such as Adele, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Pharrell Williams and the estates of Prince, David Bowie and Tom Petty have objected to the former President playing their music at public events.

“Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” was released on the B-side of the single “William, It Was Really Nothing” in 1984 and later featured on the compilation albums Hatful of Hollow and Louder Than Bombs.

The song was co-written by The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and frontman Morrissey.
